He broke Bobby Fischer’s record to become the youngest International Master in history, then a Grandmaster at 19 — a prodigy whose rise never slowed. By 1988, he was ranked third in the world, and in 1993 he became the first English player ever to challenge for the World Chess Championship, taking on Garry Kasparov in a match that captivated a nation and briefly made chess front-page news.
